BriaCell adds Sunnybrook to Phase 3 breast cancer trial

BriaCell Therapeutics has enrolled Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre's Odette Cancer Centre in Toronto as its first Canadian site for the pivotal Phase 3 Bria-ABC study, which is evaluating the Bria-IMT immunotherapy candidate in combination with an immune checkpoint inhibitor against metastatic breast cancer.

The trial's primary endpoint is overall survival. An interim analysis is planned once 144 patient deaths have been recorded, comparing outcomes in the Bria-IMT combination arm against a physician's choice control. The addition of Sunnybrook extends trial access beyond the United States, where BriaCell now reports more than 80 active sites across 15 states, including sites at Penn Medicine's Abramson Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic and Yale New Haven's Smilow Cancer Hospital.

Trial status and recent data

BriaCell's independent Data Safety Monitoring Board recently recommended continuation of the Phase 3 study without modification, a signal that no early safety concerns have triggered a pause. At ASCO 2026, the company reported Phase 2 survival data from a comparable patient population treated with the same Bria-IMT combination regimen, which the company said were positive. Bria-IMT also carries FDA Fast Track designation, a status that enables more frequent interactions with regulators and rolling review of a future biologics licence application but does not guarantee approval.

Katarzyna Jerzak, medical oncologist and clinician investigator at Sunnybrook's Odette Cancer Centre and associate professor at the University of Toronto, noted that effective treatment options for metastatic breast cancer patients remain limited and that standard therapies eventually lose efficacy for most. "We are excited to evaluate BriaCell's innovative immunotherapy approach and to offer these patients the opportunity to access a potentially effective new treatment," she said.

Market context

Metastatic breast cancer is one of the highest-value and most competitive indications in oncology. Approved checkpoint inhibitors, antibody-drug conjugates and PARP inhibitors have reshaped the treatment landscape over the past five years, yet the disease remains incurable at the metastatic stage for the majority of patients. Whole-cell immunotherapy approaches, of which Bria-IMT is an example, represent an earlier wave of personalised cancer immunotherapy and have historically faced a high bar in late-stage studies compared with targeted agents.

BriaCell's Phase 3 trial was named by Nature Medicine as one of eleven clinical trials that will shape medicine in 2026, lending the programme additional external credibility ahead of what will be a lengthy accrual period. The interim analysis trigger of 144 events means the first substantive efficacy read is unlikely before late 2027 at the earliest, depending on enrolment pace and event rate. Expansion into Canada, where health system oncology networks can accelerate patient identification, may modestly shorten that timeline.
