BioNexus advances VitaGuard MRD rollout across Southeast Asia

BioNexus Gene Lab Corp. (Nasdaq: BGLC) has moved closer to commercialising the VitaGuard tumour-naive molecular residual disease (MRD) platform in Southeast Asia, following a working visit by its commercial partners to the Tongshu Gene group's facilities in Shanghai and Changzhou. The trip covered laboratory workflows, documentation requirements, reagent specifications and routes to market, and included site visits to hospitals in China where VitaGuard is already in paid commercial use.

The company is targeting initial deployment in select medical hubs in Malaysia and Singapore during 2026, subject to the completion of laboratory verification, clinical validation and applicable regulatory approvals. BioNexus holds exclusive commercialisation rights for VitaGuard across ten Southeast Asian markets under a regional licence, covering a combined population of more than 680 million people.

The platform and its commercial structure

VitaGuard is a fixed-panel, next-generation sequencing platform designed to detect circulating tumour DNA in blood samples as a marker of residual disease in solid tumours. Because it uses a preset panel rather than a patient-specific design derived from tumour tissue, the company says it is simpler to deploy for repeat longitudinal monitoring. BioNexus has indicated it expects the cost per test to be under US$300 before local pricing and reimbursement adjustments, which management believes could support uptake in cost-sensitive healthcare systems across the region.

The corporate structure layering the deal is worth noting. Wuxi Tongshu Biotechnology, part of the Tongshu Gene group, assigned VitaGuard intellectual-property rights outside mainland China to Fidelion Diagnostics Pte. Ltd. in November 2025. BioNexus holds approximately 15% of Fidelion and has separately licensed the Southeast Asian territory from it. That gives BioNexus two commercial levers: direct revenue from its own regional business, and indirect exposure through its minority stake in Fidelion as the latter pursues licensing and partnership deals in other international markets. No definitive partnership agreements for those other markets have been signed.

Market context and competitive landscape

Liquid-biopsy MRD testing is a rapidly developing segment within oncology diagnostics. Established players including Guardant Health, Foundation Medicine and Grail have invested heavily in ctDNA-based monitoring, largely in US and European markets. The Asia-Pacific region, and Southeast Asia in particular, remains comparatively underpenetrated for commercialised MRD platforms, which gives fixed-panel approaches with lower per-test costs a potential structural advantage in markets where reimbursement pathways are still forming.

The tumour-naive, fixed-panel approach that VitaGuard uses differs from personalised MRD assays such as Adaptive Biotechnologies' clonoSEQ or Natera's Signatera, which are tailored from individual tumour or germline sequencing. Fixed-panel tests trade some analytical sensitivity for operational simplicity and reduced cost, a trade-off that may suit high-volume monitoring settings more than post-surgical minimal-residual assessments.

Sam Tan, chief executive of BioNexus, said the China visit moved the project "from contractual rights to the work of implementation." Dr Muthu Meyyappan, chief commercial officer of Fidelion, who led the working visit, noted that direct feedback from physicians using the platform in China had provided practical insight into how VitaGuard integrates into routine laboratory workflows.

Near-term milestones to watch include the completion of localisation documentation, the outcome of regulatory submissions in Malaysia and Singapore, and any announcement of a definitive commercial or laboratory partnership from Fidelion for markets beyond Southeast Asia.
