Lakeland Fire + Safety wins second GFS foul weather gear contract
Lakeland Fire + Safety's LHD Group Hong Kong subsidiary has been awarded a second consecutive contract to supply foul weather shell clothing and overpants to the Government Flying Service (GFS) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The award, confirmed on 21 August 2026, extends the company's relationship with the GFS from its original aircrewman cohort to cover pilots and engineering officers, representing a broader scope than the first contract secured in 2020.
The GFS operates round-the-clock aerial support across Hong Kong, carrying out search and rescue, aerial firefighting, aero-medical evacuation and disaster relief missions. With 331 personnel and a fleet of 12 aircraft, the service routinely exposes aircrew to extreme rainfall, high winds and heat and flame risk during rescue operations. LHD Group Hong Kong designed the initial foul weather suit in 2020 to GORE-TEX PYRAD fabric specifications, a material that combines waterproofing, breathability and flame resistance in a single-layer construction.
Design evolution and contract scope
Positive field feedback from aircrewmen over the six years since the original contract prompted the GFS to request tailored design modifications for the new user groups. LHD Group incorporated ergonomic adjustments, enhanced mobility features and additional utility pockets suited to the working postures and equipment requirements of pilots and engineering officers. The revised garment then underwent a multi-year evaluation and qualification process before the contract was awarded.
Jim Jenkins, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lakeland Fire + Safety, said the award confirmed the durability of the original design investment. "The decision to extend the programme from aircrewmen to pilots and engineering officers came only after years of operational use and a rigorous re-evaluation against competing suppliers," he said, describing the contract as representative of the long-cycle, relationship-driven business model the company is building across its fire and first responder platform.
Asia-Pacific market context
The contract reinforces Lakeland's position in the Asia-Pacific first responder protective equipment market, where it serves fire services, police forces and aviation units through LHD Group service centres in Hong Kong and Australia. The NASDAQ-listed company views government tenders of this type as generating recurring replenishment demand as garments reach the end of their service life, providing a degree of revenue predictability beyond the initial contract value. Neither the contract value nor the volume of units to be supplied was disclosed in the announcement.
The broader market for flame-resistant and high-performance protective apparel for aviation and emergency response units has seen growing demand across Asia-Pacific, driven by an expansion of public safety infrastructure and increasing operational tempo of aerial emergency services in the region. Lakeland competes in this space against both global PPE manufacturers and regional suppliers with established government relationships. The company's emphasis on custom design and long evaluation cycles, rather than commoditised catalogue supply, is a differentiation strategy that carries higher upfront cost but tends to yield stickier client relationships, particularly with government procurement bodies that prioritise demonstrated field performance over price alone.
Lakeland said LHD Group Hong Kong will manage delivery and ongoing support through its existing Asia-Pacific service network. No timetable for delivery was included in the release.
