Conavi Medical publishes hybrid IVUS-OCT case report in CCI
Conavi Medical has announced the publication of a peer-reviewed case report in Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI), describing the use of its hybrid intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography (IVUS-OCT) system to guide post-stent management in a complex coronary case. The report is the latest in a series of peer-reviewed publications the Toronto-listed company has accumulated since receiving 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for the system.
The case involved a 66-year-old patient undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of the right coronary artery. After stent placement, the clinical team deployed Conavi's system to identify proximal and distal edge dissections as well as white thrombus. The two modalities served distinct roles: IVUS guided vessel sizing and plaque assessment, while OCT's superior resolution characterised the depth and extent of the dissections. Critically, IVUS also helped distinguish an irregular protrusion visible on OCT as white thrombus rather than a calcified nodule. The authors noted that missed thrombus could have precipitated in-stent thrombosis and acute vessel occlusion.
Clinical evidence building
Jeffrey Moses, Chairman of Cardiology at Good Samaritan University Hospital and a co-author of the report, said: "The distal medial edge dissection was easily visualized on OCT but less easily discernable on IVUS. IVUS alone may have failed to demonstrate the dissection, which required timely management. Having both modalities available helped guide management and apply treatment guidelines, including the decision to place an additional distal stent while managing the proximal dissection medically."
The CCI publication follows two earlier case reports in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions: a July 2026 report on hybrid imaging in the contrast-sparing management of eruptive calcified nodules in a patient with renal impairment, and a July 2025 report on plaque rupture identification during ostial stent placement. Together, the three publications represent a methodical, case-by-case evidence programme typical of early-stage medical device commercialisation, where randomised trial data is seldom available at launch.
Market context and leadership change
The broader intravascular imaging market is currently dominated by standalone IVUS and standalone OCT platforms from large capital-equipment players including Abbott, Philips and Boston Scientific. Conavi's differentiating claim is simultaneous co-registration of both modalities in a single catheter pass. While case reports carry limited evidential weight compared with prospective cohort studies or randomised trials, they are a recognised first step in building physician familiarity and supporting guideline bodies that increasingly recommend intravascular imaging guidance for PCI. The European Society of Cardiology upgraded its recommendation for IVUS-guided PCI to a Class I indication in recent guidelines, a regulatory and clinical tailwind the broader category is benefiting from.
On the management side, Conavi confirmed that Amandeep Thind, Chief Technology Officer and co-inventor of the hybrid system, will take on leadership of the company's research and development activities. Sumeet Dham, Vice President of Research and Development, is departing the company. Conavi said it thanks Dham for his contributions to key development milestones. The CTO transition appears designed to consolidate R&D accountability in a co-founder with direct intellectual property ownership of the core technology, which may provide continuity reassurance to investors at a sensitive commercialisation stage.
Conavi trades on the TSX Venture Exchange under the ticker CNVI and on the OTCQB as CNVIF. The company has not disclosed revenue figures or commercial uptake metrics in the current release.
