RWS launches integrated eCOA linguistic validation service

RWS has combined COA licensing, translation, linguistic validation and rater training under one programme team to cut delays in global clinical trials.

RWS, the AIM-listed AI solutions and language services company headquartered in Maidenhead, has launched a new tech-enabled service that consolidates electronic clinical outcome assessment (eCOA) translation and linguistic validation under a single integrated operating model. The company says the offering is designed to reduce delays during global study start-up by eliminating the multi-vendor handoffs that routinely slow instrument go-live timelines.

The new service bundles COA licensing, source validation, multilingual translation, Trados-enabled eCOA migration, intelligent workflows, rater training and dedicated programme management into one delivery structure with a single point of accountability across the full COA lifecycle. RWS says sponsors and CROs have historically managed these components across disconnected workstreams, creating compounding delays that can affect site activation, regulatory submissions and study timelines.

The service model

Dan Herron, Global Vice President of Digital Health at RWS, said the industry had relied on fragmented delivery models for more than a decade. "Clinical teams shouldn't have to choose between speed and scientific standards," he said. "We've reimagined that approach by bringing every service together under a single programme, creating a faster, more connected and more scalable model that helps sponsors reduce complexity, protect endpoint quality and accelerate global study execution."

Rater training is a notable addition to the RWS digital health portfolio. By integrating it alongside linguistic validation and eCOA migration, the company is positioning its offering to cover a wider share of the instrument readiness process than most language service providers have historically addressed. RWS says AI-powered automation tools will be used to handle repetitive tasks and strengthen quality oversight, while subject matter experts retain responsibility for regulatory compliance and scientific rigour.

The launch also includes an external endorsement from Kayentis, described as a leading eCOA vendor. Martial Marcotti, EVP and Chief Product Officer at Kayentis, said the integrated approach "can simplify global study execution, reduce handoffs and help sponsors move faster without compromising endpoint quality, compliance or the patient experience."

Market context

The eCOA and clinical language services market has grown considerably as the volume of geographically dispersed multinational trials has increased, driven partly by regulators' requirements for validated patient-reported outcome instruments in multiple languages before study initiation. Vendors in this space include specialist linguistic validation firms, full-service CROs offering in-house translation capabilities, and eCOA platform providers that have built or acquired language services arms. RWS's move to bring rater training into the bundle reflects a broader industry trend toward consolidation of trial support services under fewer, larger vendors, in response to sponsor pressure to cut both vendor management overhead and milestone-to-milestone cycle times.

For pharmaceutical sponsors, the appeal of a single-vendor model is straightforward: fewer contracts, clearer accountability and a reduced risk of delays sitting in the gap between service providers. The challenge, as with any integrated service, is whether a single provider can maintain specialist depth across each component. RWS has not disclosed quantified timeline reductions from the new model, and independently benchmarked data comparing integrated versus fragmented delivery would be required before any productivity claims could be assessed with confidence.
