MannKind and Rose Pharma partner on inhaled GLP-1 for weight loss
MannKind Corporation and clinical-stage biotech Rose Pharma have signed a worldwide licensing and collaboration agreement to advance ROSE-010 Technosphere, an inhaled formulation of a rapid-acting, short-duration glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, in weight management. Under the deal, Rose Pharma holds an exclusive global licence to deploy MannKind's proprietary Technosphere dry-powder inhalation technology, while MannKind receives an equity stake in Rose Pharma, a board seat, and royalties on any future net sales.
MannKind will provide formulation development and manufacturing support through to the completion of a Phase 1b clinical study. Rose Pharma retains responsibility for clinical development, regulatory strategy, and eventual commercialisation. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The rationale
The logic behind the programme is straightforward: the injectable GLP-1 market is large and growing rapidly, but patient acceptance of subcutaneous injection therapy is a recognised adoption barrier, particularly among treatment-naive individuals. ROSE-010 is designed with a rapid onset and short duration of action, which its developers argue could allow patients to dose around mealtimes and maintain greater day-to-day control than is possible with once-weekly injectable formulations.
Rose Pharma points to a patient preference survey of more than 1,300 adults with obesity, led by Angela Fitch of an unnamed institution, in which respondents expressed interest in a more flexible, rapid-acting GLP-1 profile. Findings from that survey have been accepted for presentation at ObesityWeek 2026. The compound is also being explored as an on-demand treatment for irritable bowel syndrome pain, where a Phase 2a study reportedly showed clinically meaningful, statistically significant pain relief.
Enda Kenny, chief executive of Rose Pharma, said an inhaled therapy "could provide patients with greater flexibility and a new way to approach weight management," and added that ROSE-010 Technosphere has potential application in irritable bowel syndrome, "where there is significant unmet medical need for pain relief."
Market context
The inhaled GLP-1 space is considerably less crowded than its injectable counterpart, but that is in large part because the technical hurdles around pulmonary delivery of peptides are substantial. MannKind's Technosphere platform has an established precedent: Afrezza, its inhaled insulin product, navigated FDA approval and has been commercially available in the United States since 2015, giving the company a meaningful base of regulatory and manufacturing expertise to bring to bear.
The broader GLP-1 weight-management market is dominated by Novo Nordisk's semaglutide and Eli Lilly's tirzepatide, both administered by injection. A number of companies, including academic spinouts and mid-sized biotechs, are working on oral small-molecule or peptide approaches, but a clinically validated inhaled route would represent a genuinely differentiated delivery modality if Phase 1b safety and pharmacokinetic data support further development.
For MannKind, the deal extends the commercial thesis for Technosphere beyond its existing cardiometabolic and orphan lung disease portfolio without requiring the company to lead clinical risk itself. The equity-plus-royalty structure is consistent with platform-licensing models used elsewhere in drug-device combination development, and the board seat suggests a level of strategic alignment that goes beyond a standard technology-access arrangement.
Next milestones will be formulation re-establishment and optimisation, followed by nonclinical and regulatory-enabling studies ahead of the Phase 1b start. Investors will be watching for a clinical timeline and, further out, Phase 2b data in both weight management and IBS to assess whether the flexible dosing hypothesis holds in a controlled setting.
