Szeged treats 70+ patients in first month of robotic cardiology
The University of Szeged has treated more than 70 patients in the first month of its robotic cardiology programme, using the Genesis Robotic Magnetic Navigation system supplied by NYSE-listed Stereotaxis. The Hungarian institution is the first hospital in the country to establish such a programme, and Stereotaxis says the pace of adoption outstrips any previous launch of the technology globally.
The electrophysiology team, led by Prof. Tamás Szili-Török, Vice Dean of Science and Innovation and Director of the Cardiology Centre at Szeged's Szent-Györgyi Albert Clinical Centre, managed a wide spectrum of arrhythmia cases in the opening weeks. These ranged from paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter through to supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia. Notably, the team also handled several patients who had experienced multiple previous failed ablation procedures and who, the institution says, could not have been treated successfully without the robotic system.
"Treating over seventy patients in our first month is an exciting achievement and reflects both the dedication of our team and the need for advanced arrhythmia care in our community," said Prof. Szili-Török.
The technology and its context
Robotic Magnetic Navigation steers ablation catheters using externally applied magnetic fields, enabling remote control of catheter tip position with sub-millimetre precision. The technique is designed to reduce the risk of perforation and radiation exposure compared with manually guided ablation, and can facilitate access approaches that are difficult or impossible to replicate by hand. Stereotaxis reports that its systems have been used to treat more than 150,000 patients across the United States, Europe, and Asia since commercialisation.
The University of Szeged intends to mark the formal grand opening of the programme at a scientific symposium on 8 September 2026.
Market landscape
Cardiac electrophysiology robotics is a niche but growing segment within the broader surgical robotics market. Stereotaxis faces competition from catheter navigation platforms developed by larger medtech players, including remote magnetic and robotic-assisted catheter systems from companies operating across Europe and North America. The underlying clinical need is substantial: tens of millions of people worldwide live with arrhythmias, and the global atrial fibrillation ablation market has been expanding steadily as catheter-based techniques gain preference over long-term pharmacological management.
Central and Eastern Europe represents an underserved geography for advanced electrophysiology. Szeged's rapid uptake may serve as a reference site for further Genesis placements in the region, though Stereotaxis has not disclosed any additional pipeline installations in its announcement. Investors will watch whether the record first-month volume translates into a replicable adoption model for other academic centres in markets with similarly constrained access to robotic cardiac care.
