Giovanni Caforio joins CD&R as Operating Advisor for healthcare
CD&R, the New York and London-based private equity firm, has appointed Giovanni Caforio as an Operating Advisor to its funds, with a remit to support healthcare deal sourcing and portfolio company development across its global operations.
Caforio brings a lengthy executive record in large-cap biopharma. He spent the bulk of his career at Bristol Myers Squibb, joining in 2000 and serving as chief executive from 2015 to 2023. During his tenure, BMS launched 12 new medicines, tripled its revenue and completed a series of major acquisitions, most notably the $74 billion purchase of Celgene in 2019. He currently chairs the board of Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant, a position he has held since 2025. Before BMS, he spent 12 years at Abbott Laboratories.
Dave Novak, CD&R Co-President, said the firm was "thrilled" to welcome Caforio, describing him as someone who will be "a tremendous asset as we continue to identify opportunities and support management teams to drive value creation in market-leading healthcare businesses globally."
Strategic fit
CD&R has been expanding its healthcare portfolio over the past decade, with investments spanning pharmaceutical services, medical distribution and specialty care. The appointment of a figure with Caforio's operational background signals an intention to pursue larger, more complex biopharma opportunities where hands-on industry expertise can influence both deal evaluation and post-acquisition transformation.
Private equity activity in healthcare has been subject to increasing scrutiny from regulators on both sides of the Atlantic, particularly around pricing practices and market consolidation in pharmaceutical services. CD&R's emphasis on long-term value creation and "positive stewardship" is a framing that has become common among major PE firms seeking to pre-empt reputational and regulatory risk in this space.
Market context
The broader trend of senior biopharma executives moving into private equity advisory roles reflects the growing appetite among large PE firms for healthcare assets that require scientific literacy alongside financial engineering. Firms including Blackstone, KKR and Carlyle have each built dedicated life sciences teams or brought in industry veterans in similar advisory capacities over recent years.
For CD&R, Caforio's experience across commercial launches, large-scale M&A and global regulatory environments could prove particularly relevant as the healthcare sector navigates a complex period: patent cliffs at major pharma companies are freeing up assets and talent, while the post-pandemic funding correction in biotech has created acquisition opportunities at compressed valuations.
Caforio is a qualified doctor, graduating from Rome's Sapienza University in 1988, and is fluent in five languages. No specific portfolio assignments or deal mandates were disclosed alongside the announcement.
